13b — Caring About Hair (Luke 12:7)

Numbering the Hairs on Our Heads —

Have you ever wondered how many stars are in the sky, or how many grains of sand are on the shore, or how many hairs are on your head?

11954221081380097712ryanlerch_thinkingboy_outline.svg.hiYou are not alone. Down through history, people have spent a lot of time thinking about and researching these things. Based on that research, it is widely thought that the average number of hairs on our heads are as follows:

Caucasian:
Blonde 146,000 hairs
Black 110,000 hairs
Brunette 100,000 hairs
Red 86,000 hairs

African: 50,000 – 110,000 hairs

Asian: 80,000 – 140,000 hairs

Jesus claimed in Luke 12:7 that God does not need to wonder or research, because he already knows the exact number of hairs on our heads — on any given day, at any moment in time, for each individual person in the world. This attention to detail is proof of how much he loves and values us. He knows each one of us better than we know ourselves and he desires that we get to know him in return.

Watch this interesting video from Space.com about how astronauts wash their hair in space. It is a reminder that there is nowhere we can go that God is not intimately aware of everything about us — including the number of hairs on our heads.

My Prayer

Dearest Father, I am learning that the things we care about, we know about in detail. Thank you for knowing all about me — even the number of hairs on my head. Help me to show my interest in you by getting to know you more. Amen.
