God Gives Us Our Own Personal Prayer Companion —

Have you ever thought, “I wish I was better at praying. I wish I knew the right thing to say.”

God anticipated that you might feel this way and so He came up with a simple solution — a Personal Prayer Companion. That’s right! God has given each of his children a Personal Prayer Companion. His name is the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:26-27 teaches us that every time we pray, the Holy Spirit joins us and does these two things:

1) He takes our words and interprets them according to God’s will — telling the Father what we ought to say, but don’t yet understand.

2) He tells the Father our heart-words when we don’t know what actual words to pray — when all we can think or say is “Help.”

To remind you of the Holy Spirit and his role as your Personal Prayer Companion, make a Holy Spirit Flame Key Ring out of red, orange, and yellow felt or heavy construction paper.

Click here to get the patterns for each colored flame. Then trace them, cut them out, and glue them together. Make sure to place your glued flame under a heavy book so it will stay flat. When it is dry, punch a hole in the base and attach a paper clip or key ring.

Finally, hang your homemade key ring on your back pack as a reminder that the Holy Spirit is with you wherever you go — to help you as you pray. Have fun!

P.S. Why is a flame used as a symbol of the Holy Spirit?

1. In Acts 2:1-4 on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit appeared as “tongues of fire” on top of the heads of Jesus’ followers giving them the ability to speak in other languages — a symbol of His active power and presence in them.
2. In Exodus 3:1-4, God appeared to Moses in a flame that burned inside a bush without destroying it — a symbol of His holy presence and message.
3. Also in Exodus 13:21, God led the Israelites through the desert at night with a large pillar of fire — a symbol of His protection and guidance in darkness.
