How the Light Spectrum Points Us to God and Forgiveness —

Human sight is very limited. In fact, according to science there is a huge spectrum of energy in this world that we are not able to see with our own eyes. Even within the tiny range of energy (called the light spectrum) that humans can see, we have only discovered a small portion of what exists in this world.

According to the Bible, however, “God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.” (I John 1:5 NASB) This means that God has no sight limitations — all things are visible to him at all times. So when he tells us something, it’s important to listen, because he is the only one with flawless, unlimited vision and insight.

So what does this have to do with forgiveness? Everything! Until we see ourselves as as we really are — as God sees us — as fallen, sinful people, we will never understand our urgent need to seek God for forgiveness. This spiritual understanding only comes through Jesus. In fact, he is the one who claimed, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 ESV)

We know that in this instance, Jesus meant this title as a figure of speech, because of how he interpreted it. Since physical darkness affects all people at night (even those of the purest faith), it stands to reason that Jesus was saying this: those who believe in me and follow my teachings will not walk in spiritual darkness in this world. Why? Because we will have the Creator of all truth and understanding in our souls. Jesus himself will come to live within us, so that we can begin to observe and evaluate — yes, “see” things as he sees them — fully revealed, fully exposed.

What is interesting, though, is that in Revelation 21:23, John reveals that God is preparing a new world where there will be no need for the sun, because the Lord himself will be our light. So, although Jesus is teaching us about spiritual understanding when he claims to be the Light of the world in John 8:12, it is also true that Jesus is indeed the source of all physical energy — and that light actually radiates from his very being.

According to Paul, we will have the privilege of one day seeing and experiencing this wonder with our very own physical eyes. “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known.” (I Corinthians 13:12 NASB)

My Prayer

Dearest Father, Thank you for giving me physical sight and the ability to experience your world in color and shape. But more than that, thank you for giving me Jesus, the Light of the world, who reveals things I cannot see or know by myself. I accept his teachings as true. I believe that I am a sinner and in need of your help. I lay my sin at your feet and ask you to forgive me and to lead me with your perfect sight. I love you. Amen.

P.S. I am constantly amazed at the beauty of the world that I now see. I can only imagine how much more spectacular and immense my range of vision will be when I am in your presence.
