The Potter and the Clay —

My mom is the one in the middle.

My mom’s last name when she was growing up in the 1930’s and 40’s was Potter. (And yes, her father’s first name was Harry — true!) Her best friend’s last name was Clay.

When they sang the following hymn in church, the two girls would poke one another and giggle.

Have thine own way, Lord. Have thine own way.
Thou art the potter. I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after thy will,
While I am waiting yielded and still.

As a result of that story, I have always loved this song. It would have been a favorite of mine, though, no matter what, because it takes me to a place deep inside my soul where life changing things occur.

It is a place where I quiet the anxious thoughts of my heart — a place where I listen and learn from the Lord — a place where I stop squirming away from the center of the Potter’s wheel and yield to his gentle hands as he reshapes my life.
